AAC’s Guide to Digital Wristbands

Digital wristbands are the fastest growing wristband category in Australia, primarily because they incorporate new technology that provides additional security and tracking functionality. When we talk about digital wristbands, generally we refer to:

  • Photo Image RFID Wristbands
  • Woven RFID Wristbands
  • Full Colour Plastic Wristbands
  • Barcoded Tyvek Wristbands
  • Photo Image Adhesive Wristbands

What constitutes a digital wristband?

A digital wristband is one that allows for the incorporation (in whole, or in part) of variable or unique data on each individual wristband. Examples of this may include unique barcodes, QR codes, RFID chips, text, data, numbering or imagery. Set-up for printing a digital wristband is generally loaded to the printer via a file and mail merge type process, which allows for the importing of all these unique elements to the wristband.

Why is this so special? Most wristbands are printed using screen printers. This means that one colour of artwork is applied to the wristbands en masse and all during the one process. A physical screen is produced from a transparency, which is then coated with ink and 'pressed' on to the wristband, meaning that each individual wristband is exactly the same. Whilst screen printing does allow for maybe 2 or 3 colours in a design, each colour is applied separately which means it is a very laborious process and does not allow for the unique or variable data that a digital wristband does.

Wristband tickets

Digital wristbands are often referred to as wristband tickets, because some of them can incorporate all the desired functionality and data that an event or concert ticket might provide. AAC provides exactly this for the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Australia - each wristband is 100% unique, with a unique barcode, unique serial number and a unique 'human readable' number, plus special information related to the seating section and type of ticket. The wristbands are sent out in advance and used as a ticket at the gate, where they are scanned for verification.

There are numerous wristbands available that allow varying degrees of unique data and text:

Barcoded Tyvek Wristbands - these allow for a unique barcode and barcode number to be printed, and can also be printed with a short burst of variable text. Secured with a strong adhesive, this wristband is 100% made in Australia.

Digital Plastic Wristbands - great functionality with capability to print unique barcodes, numbers, and text. Secured with a single use clip for one time use only.

Photo Image Adhesive Wristbands - full digital printing capabilities, including full colour artwork, unique text, unique barcodes and numbering. Secured with an adhesive tab, and Australian Made.

RFID Wristbands - several options available, with the RFID chip providing a unique identification (UID) that can be incorporated in to your access control or event systems. RFID wristbands by AAC include single day bands, multiday bands and even reusbale silicone RFID wristbands.
